Solar domestic hot water heating is a very efficient way to use the suns energy to save on energy costs. A solar fraction of 70%-80% of total energy required is easily achieved. Recently extended federal tax credits for households and businesses help to make these systems affordable and a great investment.
Solar energy can also be effectively used for space heating. When combined with radiant floor heating, solar integration can offset a major portion of a building's heating requirements.
Solar cooling is achieved by bringing very hot solar heated water using evacuated tube or parabolic trough type solar collectors through an absorption chiller and circulated through the building and distributed via hydronic air handlers and a ducted air system. With modest photovoltaic (electric solar) input, zero energy cooling can be achieved. In the winter, the hot water is pumped to the air handlers or radiant floor heating system, bypassing the chiller. In this way the same solar infrastructure is used for both heating and cooling.
Solar thermal has also been used effectively for decades for pool and spa heating. These systems can also be tied into domestic hot water heating in homes and large commercial and municipal pools. In a large pool and domestic hot water application, a solar thermal system can dramatically reduce energy costs and offset major carbon emissions.
With rising energy prices, dependence on foreign energy sources, green house emissions and the need to improve air quality, solar thermal energy is a proven safe, efficient and reliable technology that will be large part of the solution in addressing these issues.
